about

Between 1952 and 1958 the Barchet Quartet made an integral recording of all the Mozart quartets and quintets for the Vox Company and even included four works now known to be spurious (K. Anh. 210-13). There is a wide variation in the sound quality. In this selection the three early works and also K 428 and 458 made about three years later are presented in bright sound with emphasis on the higher frequencies.

In contrast, K 387, 421. 464 and 465 have none of this emphasis. All these items – simply described on the original LP discs as ‘Rec. in Stuttgart’ – share an attractive acoustic ambience which was rare in chamber music records at that time. An attempt has been made to minimise the differences in frequency balance between the recordings but apart from that the restoration has been limited to the elimination of clicks.

Longer than usual pauses have been made between individual works.
