During the early 1950s the American record company RCA-Victor had no version of Donizetti's popular opera Lucia di Lammermoor in its catalogue, To remedy this situation in 1953 it released excerpts from the opera in a studio recording starring several principal artists from the Metropolitan Opera, New York.
The title role was taken by the high soprano, Patrice Munsel, who gives am extremely stylish account of this taxing part. Singing opposite her is the tenor Jan Peerce, the brother in law of Richard Tucker and an equally committed tenor. The villain of the piece, Enrico, is sung by baritone Robert Merrill, who matches his co-stars for powerful characterisation. Completing this all star line-up is sonorous bass Ezio Pinza. The conductor, Renato Cellini, worked at the Metropolitan Opera between 1952 and 1954, and conducted several outstanding early long playing record opera sets for RCA.
The recording is a highly satisfying pocket account of this magnificent opera, displaying in depth all the strengths of the Italian wing of the Metropolitan Opera during the early 1950s. Initially the recording was released by RCA in 12 inch, 10 inch and 7 inch formats, but further LP and CD reissues seem never to have been released.
