'One of Boult's finest surviving accounts of this work was his last, given on 12 October 1977 at the Royal Festival Hall. This was a broadcast concert to mark Vaughan Williams's 105th birthday and it turned out to be Boult's farewell to the concert platform. Like his last 'Job' at the Proms a couple of months earlier [available on CRQ 413] this Antartica was outstanding even by Boult's standards, with excellent playing from the BBCSO helping to produce a performance of overwhelming authority. It is enhanced at the climax of 'Landscape' by the magnificent sound of the Festival Hall organ (played by Alan Harverson), and is crowned by a visionary account of the 'Epilogue' in which the soprano soloist was the young Margaret Marshall.'
