During the summer of 2000, I attended the annual conference of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections held at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to deliver a paper on Sir Thomas Beecham. While there I was fortunate enough to meet David Hall (1916-2012), the veteran American recording producer and writer on recordings. In conversation he told me that the Dorati / Chicago recording sessions for Mercury Records of 1954 - of which the recordings presented here are the sum total - were amongst the most exciting recording sessions which he had ever attended, an extraordinary endorsement. This appears to be the first time that these recordings have been released all together.- David Patmore / CRQ Editions
