lyrics

At the time of this performance, only one commercial recording of Britten's The Turn of the Screw was available, that conducted by Britten himself and recorded by Decca in 1954 shortly after the work's premiere. This French Radio broadcast of 1977 thus represented at the time a rare opportunity to hear this work performed outside the tradition of Britten's English Opera Group.
The performance is notable for its international cast. The central role of The Governess is sung by the American-French soprano Peggy Bouveret whose operatic career flourished during the 1970s and 1980s after which she has enjoyed a distinguished career as a teacher in France and elsewhere. The dual roles of The Prologue ( the narrator) and Peter Quint are sung by Ian Partridge, who has enjoyed a varied career on the concert platform as well as the operatic stage. The mezzo-soprano Joyce Castle (Mrs Grose) has been a central figure in American operatic life since her stage debut in 1970. The conductor, Viennese born Julius Rudel, who died in 2014, had a distinguished career, leading the New York City Opera and subsequently the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as appearing in opera houses across the world. The supporting cast - Sandrine Piau, Bernadette Antoine and James Maguire - is also very strong.
