The recordings of Sir Granville Bantock conducting his own music were made in the Kingsway Hall on 15th November 1945, just 11 months before his death. They were originally released as Paxton 12" 78rpm records. The orchestra was the Metropole Symphony Orchestra and the works recorded were tracks 1-6 of the present release. These are among the most sought-after recordings of Bantock's music.

The conductors Walter Collins and Dolf van der Linden recorded a considerable amount of Bantock's music for the Paxton label, a selection of which is presented here on tracks 7 to 16.

Of recordings of Bantock's choral music the rarest is that with Stanford Robinson conducting the National Choir and the Wireless Symphony Orchestra in two pieces from Bantock's The Pilgrim's Progress, which were originally released on a Columbia 12" 78 (9894).

The publishing company Paxton operated in London, and published mainly songs and piano music from the 1870s. During the heyday of the piano, from 1899 to 1940, output was very vigorous, with many reprints of favourites for solo piano. Paxton's list included music by many contemporary British composers, apart from Bantock, including Harry Farjeon, John Foulds, Frederick Cutchee, Edwin Cundell and Cyril Jenkins. During the 1940s Paxton developed a considerable library of mood music recordings.
