Jonathan Sternberg (1919-2018) was one of H. C. Robbins Landon’s earliest collaborators. assisting in the research of manuscripts in Austrian libraries and monasteries. Back in the USA he was also involved in the setting-up of the Haydn Society, conducting many of their earliest recordings which were made in Vienna,

The first LPs involved choral works, mostly conducted by Sternberg (whose second version of Haydn's Missa in angustiis or Nelson Mass can be found on CRQ 029) The symphonies represented here were recorded early enough also to be issued on 78rpm shellac. No.1 even appeared on a single such disc although at nine shillings and eightpence-halfpenny it was rather expensive at the time for the United Kingdom and there was room for only one of the six repeats.

In general, Jonathan Sternberg employs broad tempi and this gives a satisfying element of grandeur to the minuets. In Symphony 22 he takes the popular subtitle ‘Philosopher’ seriously, approaching the opening Adagio in a deeply thoughtful and unhurried manner.

The style of performance in these recordings from 1949, reflects the mid-nineteenth century approach to authenticity. At that time there was no easy access to period instruments but strings are not too numerous, winds are represented boldly, harpsichord is used appropriately and the selection of repeats is adequate.

Many symphonies were recorded on the Haydn Society label; several more by Sternberg and others by Heiller, Litschauer and Wöldike, a selection of which CRQ Editions plans to reissue in the future.
