from CRQ 452 VLADIMIR HOROWITZ LIVE IN RECITAL LENINGRAD 27 04 1986,
released March 29, 2021
In 1986 Vladimir Horowitz returned to Russia, the land of his birth, to give recitals in Moscow and Leningrad. The Moscow recital was broadcast to Western Europe and recorded for release on sound and video by Deutsche Grammophon. It excited much international media attention.
By contrast the Leningrad recital was evidently a much more informal affair, with Horowitz returning to the concert hall where he had given many performances before he left the Soviet Union in 1927.
This recording of the Leningrad recital, which seems to have been made informally, reveals a much more relaxed Horowitz. The absence of the tension present at the Moscow recital clearly allowed Horowitz to display the full panoply of his extraordinary virtuosity and musicianship.
