Since his death in December 1989 the recorded legacy of Sir John Pritchard has diminished considerably. Pritchard was one of the most distinguished British conductors of his generation, conducting all over the world, and at different times holding significant musical appointments in England, Europe and the United States.

This recording preserves a broadcast performance of one of Richard Strauss' most opulent works, given in London in the final year of Pritchard's life.

Richard Strauss's music was repertoire in which he reveled, but little of which he recorded commercially. Hence the significance of this release.
