In the autumn of 1953 the Bavarian State Opera accepted the invitation to present a short season of three operas by Richard Strauss (Arabella, Capriccio, Die Liebe der Danae) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London. This was revelatory in a number of respects. Firstly it included the first performance in the United Kingdom of Strauss's penultimate opera, Die Liebe der Danae, which had received its first public performance at the Salzburg Festival during the previous year. Secondly it introduced Rudolf Kempe, the General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera, to British audiences and so was the start of the intense relationship between them and Kempe, who went on to be the chief conductor of two major British orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony. And thirdly it displayed the brilliant work of the stage director Rudolf Hartmann, the Intendant of the Bavarian Opera and the stage director of all the three operas presented. The BBC broadcast performances of all three operas presented but regrettably the broadcast of Capriccio appears not to have been preserved. That of Arabella has been reissued on CD on the Testament label.
