The sources used for the recordings conducted by Clemens Krauss in this release are varied. The performance of Smetana’s Vltava from Ma Vlast is taken from an Allegro Elite LP published in North America during early 1950s under the pseudonym ‘The Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Joseph Berendt.’. The true identity of the performers was discovered by Enst Lumpe, who has written of this issue: ‘Smetana’s symphonic poem is a real find! It is the German war-time radio studio recording with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Clemens Krauss, recorded in Berlin on November 24, 1944. This performance was issued on Allegro/Elite and Concertone [as well as Royale]. As far as the author could find out, this performance has not been issued under the proper names of orchestra and conductor ever since. The tape is still in the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv in Frankfurt/Main’. This would therefore appear to be the first CD release of this recording, and one of the few recordings of Krauss conducting this particular orchestra.
The two recordings featuring Krauss and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are believed to be taken from radio recordings of concerts from the Musikvereinsaal in Vienna given shortly before the occupation of Vienna at the end of the Second World War. These recordings have appeared on CD in Japan but appear not to have been released previously in Europe.
The two substantial extracts from Krauss’s 1951 appearance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conducting Tristan und Isolde were recorded privately from the BBC broadcast of May 29 1951 by the husband of Constance Shacklock, who sings the role of Brangäne in this performance. This was the first of a series of four performances to be conducted by Krauss in that year at Covent Garden. We are most grateful to Mark Hood for kindly providing a copy of this rare recording.
