Track 4: Wolf-Ferrari: Chamber Symphony, Op. 8: Movt 4: Adagio

Rudolf Kempe, piano

Members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra

Studio recording Bavarian Radio 28 December 1970

from CRQ 423 Rudolf Kempe plays and conducts rare Piano Concertos by Wolf-Ferrari and Khachaturian, released May 22, 2020
Wolf-Ferrari's Chamber Symphony, Op. 8, published in 1903, is neither 'serious' chamber music nor a big symphonic work, but an extraordinarily free, playful, blissfully melodic work, which sometimes seems to draw in the night atmosphere of Piazza San Marco in Venice where small chamber ensembles try to outplay each other with entertaining, virtuosic or serious tunes. A thoroughly happy Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari we meet here, a 25 years old genius on his way to world fame.
