The initiator of superb recording of Rigoletto was Nanni Ricordi, of the music publishers, Ricordi, who had heard the same cast during the previous year in a production given at the Teatro Donizetti, Bergamo, conducted by Franco Mannino. The location of the recording, the Teatro della Pergola, Florence, like Ricordi had very close associations with the composer Verdi dating back to the middle of the nineteenth century. The cast had similar close associations with each other. The baritone Bastianini had a villa close to Florence where in the stifling heat of July rehearsals took place. Alfredo Kraus had counselled Renata Scotto when a few years previously she had suffered a vocal crisis, and Fiorenza Cossotto and Ivo Vinco were married to each other. All held the conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni in the highest respect as an outstanding example of the Italian opera maestro. Ricordi's master-stroke was to engage as the recording team team the duo Wilma Cozart and Robert Fine, the backbone of Mercury Records, who delivered a superb example of location engineering.

The resulting recording stands as a fitting tribute to the artistry of the soprano Renata Scotto, who died aged 89 on 16 August 2023.
